The voices
A girl is waiting for the train at an unspecified provincial station; she is determined to leave and to abandon her homeland.
In the corners of the station, piles of boxes without names or addresses are stacked. The wait for the train is disturbed by two enigmatic characters: the stationmaster and his assistant. It soon becomes clear that they are the ones accumulating these boxes, the contents of which remain unknown until a delay on the train schedule forces the girl to stay at the station and realize that each box contains voices, the voices of all the people who, like her, left but never returned. Of those travelers, only voices in the wind remain, voices that, however, continue to speak through those who are able to listen to them.
As in all stations, the voices of these passengers echo, bouncing off the roofs and disturbing the peace of the small provincial station.
By opening the boxes, the voices speak through the three characters. Of these memories, some are very ancient, others more recent, and their revelation, for a moment, through the voice of the girl and the other two characters, builds the story of a country, of a region that could be Abruzzo, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, or Sicily (all the characters to whom the voices belong speak in dialect).
Each voice is a portion of time that is revealed to the viewer by opening one of the boxes. Each voice tells of a tradition that has either trapped or freed the character who tells it. A little girl who does not want to grow up, a woman haunted by a little spirit, a man who resists the evacuation of his village reduced to a few souls, a girl who does not accept that her trousseau is ready even before she learns to write, and others. Each box opens a small world and then closes in on itself again.
When the girl realizes that every traveler, by leaving, leaves something of themselves behind, she will have to decide whether to go or stay.
