Freely adapted from the story by Jean Giono The Man Who Planted Trees.
The protagonist, Louis Clément, appears to us as he is designing a new park for his city. He is in the company of his dog ZuZu, whom he loves very much; “it is difficult to love a dog, like a plant,” Louis tells us; “there is no reward, except for being happy.”
If it is already difficult to love an animal, let alone a plant. From this premise begins Louis’s story, in which he tells us about his encounter with a special man who spent his entire life doing nothing but planting trees. Despite his simplicity and the total solitude in which he lived, this man had accomplished a great deed, an undertaking that would change the face of his land and the lives of future generations.
A parable about the relationship between man and nature, an exemplary story that tells “how men could be just as effective as God in fields other than destruction.” On this journey, the protagonist will witness the birth, destruction, and rebirth of a natural landscape and will meet singular and eccentric characters with whom he will share a simple adventure: witnessing how the world and we ourselves can change, simply by loving the earth, the soil.
The staging includes the use of puppets and shadows that accompany the narration.
The story is enriched with some scientific digressions that help us understand how trees and, in general, plants are the strongest weapon the planet has to save itself.
Trees, indeed, as friends... mine.
